Becoming a registered psychologist in Australia is a rewarding journey that requires dedication, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Whether you’re just beginning your studies or navigating the final steps of your supervised practice, understanding the registration process—and the value of continued professional development—can help set you up for long-term success in the field.

The Pathway to Registration for Psychologists

Step 1: Complete an Accredited Sequence of Study

General registration requires a minimum six-year sequence of education and training. This typically includes a four-year Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) approved accredited sequence of study in psychology, followed by one of the below pathways.

  • the 5+1 internship pathway. This requires you to pass the national psychology exam before applying for general registration.
  • the higher degree pathway, which is an approved postgraduate degree accredited at the fifth and sixth-year level (eg. two-year Master) or higher (eg. three or four-year Doctorate)

Step 2: Apply for Provisional Registration

Once you’ve completed the initial academic requirements, you can apply for provisional registration with AHPRA. This allows you to begin your supervised practice, which is a core component of becoming fully registered.

Step 3: Undertake Supervised Practice

Supervision helps bridge the gap between theory and practice. Depending on your pathway:

  • 5+1 interns complete a one-year supervised internship
  • Higher degree students undertake placements within their postgraduate program

During this stage, you’ll develop core competencies in assessment, intervention, ethical practice, and reflective functioning, under the guidance of a Board-approved supervisor.

Step 4: Sit the National Psychology Exam

If you’re following the 5+1 pathway, you’ll need to pass the National Psychology Exam. This assessment ensures that you meet the minimum competencies required for safe and effective practice.

Step 5: Apply for General Registration

Once you’ve completed your supervised practice and passed the exam (if required), you can apply for general registration as a psychologist. This marks the official start of your professional career.

Why Continuous Education Is Essential for Psychologists

Registration isn’t the end of your learning—it’s just the beginning.

Psychology is a dynamic field that evolves with new research, emerging therapies, and shifting social needs. To maintain competence and meet the ongoing registration requirements, psychologists must engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

CPD is not just a box to tick—it’s an opportunity to sharpen your skills, explore areas of interest, and stay up to date with best practices. Whether you’re learning about trauma-informed care, refining your formulation skills, or deepening your understanding of ethics, CPD ensures you’re delivering the best possible support to your clients.
